Unless there is a specific event or holiday in mind, my sewing revolves around my children. So practical, easy clothing pieces that withstand daily laundry, easy care, no ironing and fun colors just spell "knits" for me.

"Knits" is a general term we use to describe fabrics that are knitted (as opposed to woven) during manufacturing: jersey, interlock, mesh, stretch lace, etc. Most of my children's everyday clothes are made with Cotton/Lycra Jersey. Lycra (spandex) adds a little stretch to the garment to help it maintain shape and durability.

But for girls' "dressy dresses" - yes, that's what we call them - as opposed to regular dresses woven fabrics are my first choice. Yes, there are plenty dressier knit fabrics, stretch lace, rayon blends, but nothing beats a beautifully made woven dress.

I have made quite a few woven dresses for my girls, mostly using "The Big 4" patterns, but recently came across some fabulous, fun dress patterns by Independent Designers.

I have discovered Candy Castle Patterns (no affiliation) - so many fun dress patterns for girls!
Thing I like the most? You can combine bodice and sleeves from one pattern with a skirt from another pattern, creating your own version. I purchased the Peppermint Swilr Dress and The Candy Castle Princess dress and planning on making both next week.

While on the lookout for more woven girls' dress patterns to try, I was lucky to test the Infinite A-line Dress Pattern by Bonnie from from Whisk 'Em Pattern. This is my go-to woven dress pattern for now. Originally made the button back, empire waist 3/4 sleeve version with an added ruffle.
I used quilting cotton fabric for the body, KAM (plastic) snaps instead of buttons, shortened the sleeves to 3/4 and my daughter loves it!

Planning on a simple a-line dress with accent pockets next. Great way to use up my quilting cotton stash, since I haven't been quilting much lately.
One advantage PDF pattern designers have over "The Big 4" are the clear photos of each step in the pattern. I find that written instructions, doesn't matter how detailed are not enough for many self-taught beginners! You, know, "a picture is worth a thousand words".

And while, at this point in my sewing, I rarely use instructions, I truly appreciate a designer who puts in time and thought into making the pattern approachable to all.
Not due to lack of sewing content to post, but due to lack of time. Spring is almost here, which means lot's of spring sewing. T-shirts, short-sleeve dresses, shorts and swimsuits are all on my "to-sew" list in the coming weeks.
I have also received beautiful fabrics -some I styled and had printed myself, some from custom fabric groups and some bright, beautiful solid jersey knits to complement pinted fabrics.
Some of my favorites this week:

White Stars on Charcoal Background - great neutral fabric for both boys and gilrs
Tiny Pink flowers - to be used as an accent in spring dresses
Soccer Ball print Jersey - for my boys
and
Lace print on lilac Jersey - custom printed for me.
More about stuff made from these fabrics later this week.

What have I been sewing / making /crafting lately?

First of all, I've been lucky to test Pickle Toes T-Shirt Pattern. What's sets this T pattern aside? Sizing! Available in regular and slim, this is definitely one of the most comprehensively sized T-shirt's I have tested. Included are sizes 2-18 in tunic or shirt length with optional hood .
One thing I was truly impressed about - is the designer's desire to get the sizing "just right". We had to give feedback on shoulder width, neck width and length, etc., etc. and quite a few adjustments were made to the pattern over the testing period. This a loose fitting T-shirt, perfect for spring and summer if made in lighter weight cotton jersey or interlock.
My teen approved (you know, as much as a teen approves of anything mommy made).

I used lightweight camo print ponte fabric for the body and Olive Cotton/Lycra jersey for the neck.

Another new to me pattern I used this week was the Pretty Panel Dress from A Sparkle Baby Designs, purchased during the last sale and never got around to using it.
While I like the ease of traditional garment construction, I am always on a lookout for something new and fund, and this dress was both!
What a great design to use those custom fabric panels I am hoarding (admit it, I am not the only one!) For this dress, I used 2 fun cotton prints and no panel, but I already have another one cut out in size 6, ready to go.

This one is heading out to my Etsy and Zibbet Stores ;)

And this brings me to few tips on using a twin needle on your sewing machine.
All vertical seams on the dress above as well as neckline were topstitched using a twin (double needle). I used to hate using a double needle for many, many years, until, I was able to come up with combination of "tricks" which help create the best seam every time.
Top-stitching with a double needle gives you handmade garments this " finished" look.

Use the right needle for the job! This is the most important rule of all, in my opinion. The needles are available in ballpoint, jersey, regular and in numerous size to correspond to the type of fabric you are using. Choose the correct needle. I use ballpoint for cotton jersey, interlock and ponte and universal for cotton twill, lightweight denim and quilting cotton.

If you do not have an additional thread post (the "stick" that holds the spool you can use the same one, by winding matching thread on a spare bobbin and placing both the bobbin and spool on the same post, making sure they unwind in different directions.

Read your sewing machine manual! This should be top tip, but I assumed that you already did this. In any case, your manual will explain in short how to use and thread your machine for double needle use.

For top-stitching denim - use a heavy needle, denim thread and regular thread in the bobbin. I always get a little "worming" on the wrong side due to thread weight difference, but since the stitching is purely decorative, I consider it acceptable.

On sale now for $6.50

I was fortunate to test this pattern and we were very pleased with the fit! Finally, a well fitting, slim raglan for girls with sleeve options and a nice neckline. And while my daughters are still young, I can see this pattern becoming a staple in their tween and teen wardrobes soon, as the pattern includes sizes 6-16.

This was my first time trying a Hey June pattern and I was impressed with the layout, instructions and illustrations.

Here is our version:
I added a contrasting band to the 3/4 sleeve- perfect for spring and no hemming!
I finished a dress, 3 t-shirts, 3 pants, bolero cardigan and a wristlet.

I am starting with the dress, since it was the most fun and funky (yes, I said) funky project to make.

The pattern is the Little 4 A While Penny Dress and it's so much fun!
My daughter loves it, her teaches loved it and all the preschoolers loved it!
Just looking at these colors makes me happy!
I used cotton lycra and cotton interlock and couldn't be more pleased with the results.
The second level could definitely be made from scraps.

And of course, obligatory twirl test: PASSED!

Next up, Tshirts for the little guy, getting ready for spring and summer. The Reid from EllieDactyl is a great pattern with so many options! I like the colorblocking, since I get to use up all the cotton lycra scraps and with a little extra effort and some topstitching, the results are worthy of any children's wear boutique. Here are some I made this week:

Yes, the monsters are upside down, but let's face it, my kid stands on his head at least some of the time!

And some pants to go with these:Both are Chipmuk Cheeks Pants from Duck Butt Designs.

The A-line swing dress aka Lil' LDT with cowl neck from Love Notions is the only dress she is willing to consider. She does like to jump and twirl, however as all gymnasts do.
So, what's a great alternative to a twirly dress? A great peplum top, of course! When A Sparkly Baby recently came out with the Empress Dress pattern, I admit, I said "not another twirly dress!". But after testing it, I realized I was wrong!

First of all, there are so many t-shirt top, twirly circle skirt dress patterns out there. What grabbed my attention is the empire waist a-line tunic option. My daughter, wanted a "twirly" top, however.
The end result is a shirt length, peplum top with 3/4 sleeves and petal ruffle trim - perfect for spring!

I can see myself using this pattern again and again. First of all, the sizing is very generous Preemie to Size 14! I love, love when designers include all sizes and I don't have to purchase multiple copies for my girls.
The skirt options include circle skirt, hankie hem, a-line in tunic, shirt and dress length.
Sleeves: short, 3/4, long, hemmed, ruffle, petal ruffle (my favourite!)
And, of course the ever popular hood. Definitely worth the price!
Use coupon code "EMPRESS" to save 30% on any pattern in A Sparkly Baby pattern store (I am not an affiliate, just love these patterns!)

I definitely sew many easy, fast, comfy pieces and outfits for my kids and myself. That's how we like it. Easy on and off, easy care, great for layering knits, tops, sweatshirts, leggings.

But once in a while I love to make a structured garment. First of all, I get to "dust off" sewing skills I haven't used in a while, think of creative solutions to sewing problems and enjoy the process.

The Mackinaw Coat allowed me to do all that. First of all, the testing was fun! I've tested a few indie patterns and this designer stood out with attention to detail. Once you see the pattern, you will understand.

It was a pleasure to sew, the instructions are fantastic, and very detailed with full color illustrations.

And best of all - my daughter is very pleased with the coat! As a matter of fact, she has requested another one, black with black fur collar of course, since black goes with everything!

I made the dramatic collar version in Painting Red Rhinos baby corduroy with a fleece collar, bound buttonholes and cotton hot pink cheetah print lining.
The fit was excellent and true to size, nice shoulder definition and roomy enough through the sleeve to add insulation, if the need arises.

An adventurous beginner/intermediate sewist would have a great time making this coat and learning new techniques. And if you want easy? Just follow the instructions, omit bound buttonholes and replace with regular buttonholes or even KAM snaps (large plastic snaps) and you are done!

Options include: dramatic or regular shawl collar, built in loop detail, sizes 12 month to 12 years for both boys and girls, buttoned belt and bound buttonholes, front pockets with optional placket.

I would love to try out a denim version as well - it would look fantastic in dark denim with lighter fleece collar, topstitching and brass jeans buttons.
Some of them have been released, some are in final stages and a couple don't even have a release date yet.
This also gives me an opportunity to start on spring sewing for the girls (and the Little Tornado).

I have been thinking on creating a Girl's Clothing Capsule for Spring, but my approach is to sewing (and crafts in general) is so organic that I don't think I'll stick to strict pattern/design guidelines in my capsule. Also, my younger daughter is still at this age, where I can get away
with fun, bright prints and colors.

One of the patterns I tested this week was an "Adorabelle Twirl and Swirl Dress" by Pickle Toes Patterns. This one was fun to make! It has so many options, ruffles, the very popular Pixie Hood, short or long sleeves, flutter sleeves or
sleeveless, Peplum top, tunic or dress length, plain front, or panel front, with or without pockets, and I sizing 12m-12T.
I love that designers are creating versatile patterns, with so many options and possible combinations. Thinking of capsules, patterns like this can be used to create anything from a T-Shirt, Tunic, Dress, Peplum Top, Skirt and even and Undershirt.

Here is my version with bell sleeves, flutter, round neck, double twirl skirt. Go check out the designers blog for inspiration! I've seen testers make such fun garments with this pattern.

I used a panel from Peek-A-Boo, color-blocked on the sides.
Fabrics used: navy blue and yellow interlock and cotton lycra panel for front.

Daughter approves, loves the colors (what a nice departure from our usual pink-purple-lilac-fuschia-hot pink-you get the idea) color combination.
And....it makes her fly!

How does pattern testing work?
From time to time, sewing pattern designers announce a "Tester Call" - search for sewist(s) to "test" out their new pattern, following instructions completely and submit relevant feedback, pertaining to size, fit, details, instructions and cutting layout, among the rest.
The "testers" are of different skill levels and sewing backgrounds are are able offer insight and information to the designer in return for a free finished pattern, advertising exposure and sometimes, payment.
This is a great way of learning new sewein skills and techniques as well, as the tester support groups are full of helpful information from different members as well.

So, what have I tested recently? Some of the patterns have no release date, and I can show you sneak peeks and description, but not the whole garment (at least not yet!)

Girl Coat:

This was incredibly fun, albeit an involved garment to complete.
Some of the detailing:

double bound buttonholes

full bagged lining

hidden pockets

hidden belt guide

Here is a sneak peek of the dramatic collar version

Slim Fit Girls' Raglan by Hey June Handmade

This pattern has not been released yet, and I love the details and options!
There are many raglan sewing patterns on the market, but none are tailored for girls like this one:
Slim fit with waist shaping throughout, long, short or elbow sleeve options, hooded or jewel-neck, with optional sleeve stripes, rounded hem or banded. Many possibilities.
Well loved and worn repeatedly!

(this is the only one released as of right now)

Tons and tons of options. As far as I can tell, if you sew for kids, this is the only basic Tee pattern you need. Versatile and Unisex for sizes Premiee-14.
I am also currently testing the Candy Pocket Twirl Dress version based on the Ultimate Tee pattern.

For this tee, I used Ultimate Tee pattern, Adult T-Shirt and charcoal cotton/lycra fabric for the neck band and bottom band. I cut the sleeves, using the original sleeve hem. Very easy and quick upsycle with no hemming!

And the fourth pattern I can not mention yet, because it's in pre-testing!
So, that's what I've been busy with.
Hoping to get back to my 2016 "resolution sewing" soon.Sew Quiltyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12147786719434043266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5119140081503543325.post-48420733226398387072016-01-27T05:04:00.004-08:002016-01-27T05:07:33.564-08:00My Sewing Resolutions (2016 edition)I am not big on resolutions really. I believe that when a person wants to make a change (positive or otherwise) they can start at any moment in time.
So resolutions for me are more of a "to do list". And lists I do like. Type A!

I approach sewing just like everything else in life: as learning opportunity, and now that I have little humans, sometimes as a teaching opportunity as well. I love patterns and designs with interesting details and challenging techniques, which allow me to obtain new skills.

My 5 year old started sewing recently.
She is the only one that takes interest and has enough patience so far.
And that's OK.
She enjoys it and her sewing accomplishments make her proud.

Sewing Resolutions for 2016
(or Sewing I am attempting to accomplish, but sadly realize I never have enough time)

Sew Bags and a nice wallet - yes, I've made bags before, but I want a really nice, well made bag from fabrics/vegan leather I love with nice hardware, pockets and compartments.
I am looking at Swoon Bags for fun patterns now, but if you have other ideas- spam me!
Made a couple of Swoon bags since starting this post: Ramona and Coraline!
Here is Coraline (this one is available in my Etsy or Zibbet Stores)

Bra Sewing - this is one of the main items on my "sewing to do list" While I've made a few bras this year: wire-free, underwire, self-drafted cup, 2 different foam bras; I would like to concentrate more on drafting and adjusting the fit.
Steps:

Re-watch both courses I took on Craftsy for bra constructions and design.

Study the book I just received

Draft and make a muslin of padded, unpadded and wire free bras

Draft and sew a supportive sports bra

Resources:
My trusty Craftsy Classes:

I would like to concentrate on fit and design more.

Intimately Yours: Bras That Fit Book

I received my copy and find the information useful, but mostly geared towards beginners.
Would like to experiment with power bars, support, etc.

Pattern Drafting and Grading - need to think about plan of action on this one. Definitely not buying more patterns this year (with the exception of some independent pattern designers)
I am going to look into a good course online or a book (not new to drafting)

So far I have found Create Any Size: Pattern Grading for Sewers on Craftsy and a highly recommended book (or a booklet) by Nancy Zienman - The Busy Woman's Fitting Book.
Also, some great tutorials at Curvy Sewing Collective.

Active wear - I recently discovered a source for fabulous active wear supplex fabric and I now see no reason to buy overpriced leggings and tops for workouts.Sports Bra- is one of the bras on my agenda for this year.

Reverse Applique - a technique I wanted to try for a long time and always forget about it.

Quilting:
Finish the Star Wars Quilt I've been making (started over a year ago!)
Inventory the fabric for Kool Kaleidoscope I've been collecting fabric for and see what's missing.

Photography: while not directly related to sewing, I would like to brush up on my photography skills, Photoshop and Lightroom for better quality pictures ad to provide pictures for designer sewing pattern testing.

And that's it!
Looking forward to reading your crafty resolutions, 2016.
I love using flower prints in the winter!
This Lil' LDT dress from Love Notions started out in stretch denim without color accents and looking very, very drab and sad. (Why did I think that hooded A-Line dress in stretch dark denim would look "fun"???)
I chopped of the hood, added flower print cowl, peek-a-boo pockets and matching flower leggings and now it's a favorite outfit!
Forums and reviews on SewingPatterns.com are full f raves regarding fit, ease of alterations, stylish design.
So I spent so time going over the patterns, deciding what would be a good pattern to try for winter.

I narrowed it down to the following few:

I started off with an easy and widely available Kwik Sew bra pattern 3594, available for purchase as a download from SewingPatterns.com or as a paper pattern from KwikSew and from Pattern Rreview.

It is a great and easy pattern with instructions - but not for large sizes!
The skinny strap does not offer enough support.
Of course, my choice of fabrics did nothing to rectify this.
I used 2 layers of stretch satin (one way stretch from famous bra maker fabric closeouts) for the cup and powe rmesh for both cradle and wings.
Cradle: the front flat part of the bra, which supports the cups.
Wings: back panels, traditionally made from stretch fabric, to which the adjustable hooks and straps attach.

Needless to say, this bra offers no support and is quite uncomfortable, even with underwires, the traps stretch and dig into my shoulders.
Besides, I tried dyeing the power-mesh with food coloring and ended up with tie-dyed wings, elastic and hardware.

(And don't let the pretty deep magenta color fool you)

Back to the drawing board:
I saw an ad for Bra Sewing Class on Craftsy!
After watching the preview, I realized that this (for me personally) would be the most optimal way to learn more about bra sewing.
Yes, I Googled and read reviews, notes, even the instructor's biography and everyone agrred that Beverly Johnson is the main authority on bra sewing.

After taking the Sewing Bras: Construction and Fit course I was finally confident enough to "hack" my bra.
I used the same Kwik Sew pattern and was able to draft and sew a great fitting, lightweight, which fits perfectly.
Bottom cup has been divided into 2 for more support and better shaping.
I did not purchase any additional patterns, kits or fancy sewing supplies.

I used opaque firm Simplex (Duoplex is more available), plush elastics in different width, salvaged hardware from old bras and the following notions (not a must but nice to have):

mini rotary cutter (I used 28mm)

craft clips (better than pins, especially with satin, which doesn't like holes)

marking pen

ruler

ball point or stretch needle, depensing on your fabric type

In my next post I'll review other bra sewing patterns I've tried:

a review of different supplies, sources and notions.

I stuumbled upon many free sewing patterns links and decided to list them here for easier reference.
Some require FB group sign up for free codes.
I received 2 shipments in 2 days and one of them was lost by the post office for such a long time, I already forgot what patterns I ordered.

My Image

I've been waiting to try these for a while. After subscribing to Ottobre (both kids and women) for a few years, I stopped, mostly because there wasn't enough time to sew in dozens of Ottobres I already own.

My Image appealed to me for 2 reasons: size range and the fact that each pattern option is featured in different fabrics and sizes in each issue. I love seeing all the options.

Once they sent an email for Black Friday sale - 50% off and free shipping, and free additional pattern of choice I jumped at the opportunity.

Here are the issues I ordered:

A nice range of sizes and a nice range of patterns: a tunic, 5 dresses, 2 pants, a basic pencil skirt, sweater, cardigan, 2 jackets and a coat.

Here is an example of a skirt as presented in the issue:
I will post a more detailed review once I actually trace and use the patterns.
Argyle sweater knit tollder vest progress.

I used the a very simple and free! Dashing Vest pattern from Love Notions for this vest.
Yes, I "fussycut" the front panel as well as back.

This is a fastest, cutest and most inexpensive project and my toddler loves it!

Argyle Sweater Knit Vest

"Fussycutting" is a term mostly used by quilters, It's way to cut fabric to showcase a certain fabric element, design or motif.

In this case, the "fussycut" was in order to showcase the color cream argyle elements.
I wanted them centered on front panels as well as back.

The process:
Trace the pattern pieces onto baking paper, tracing paper or template plastic.

Lay out your fabric right side up, centering the design element you want to showcase.

(This pic shows the pattern piece already cut)

Trace the fabric element on your pattern (it doesn't have to be detailed, general outline is fine, but you should be able to see it well)

I traced 2 diamond shapes to make sure the pattern piece is truly centered.

This was my first time using the YoYo Henley Pattern from Patterns for Pirates but definitely not my last.

Great fit for slim boys!

I chose the banded tunic length version and here is why: the shirt is fitted through the body and the band gives us some extra growing length.
Currently it's being worn turned under.

More about options: the big Henley has an unlined hood, thumbhole cuffs , henley placket with snaps and lower band.

The little henley was maded with wide front placket, hemmed bottom and sleeves, shirt length.
Both are comfy, although for a toddler, I would size next up next time.

Colorblocked thumbhole cuffs: the color-blocking was a necessity and not a design element : I simply ran out of fabric. As a matter of fact, no scrap of fabric from either color left.

Basically, this pattern will cover all options for T-Shirts for my boys the next few years:

Short Sleeve T

Long Sleeve T, 3/4 sleeve

Banded Tunic Length

Hooded

Henley

curved hem

banded cuff

hemmed sleeve, etc.

It will most likely not work for my bigger boys, but the the slim fit is just perfect for the younger ones.
Sizes: 3moth-14 years.

Fabric used: cotton lycra blend. It would also work in interlock, but really needs to have stretch recovery for proper slim fit.
Camo cotton lycra print from stash and black cotton lycra from BWD fabric on Etsy.

So far 2 are close to completion.
Don't have correct fabric for the third and every attempted trip to fabric store has failed.
The last one, today by a cute toddler with fever and cough.

Shirt 1:

PATTERNS for PIRATES Raglan

This one has been quite a project.
The size I chose was too wide in the sleeves and body. I took it apart and re-cut for smaller size.
The main body is cotton interlock fabric with no recovery, so we'll have to see how it drapes.

Shirt 2:

Skinny B*tch Curvy Chick TONIC 2

I love, love the fit of this one.
It's an excellent cut for short curvy girls.
I raised the neck by 1.5'' and not happy with neck binding. Redoing it now.
